ownCloud, the open source file-sharing project which enables individuals to create their own local cloud, has evolved into a company. Former SUSE/Novell executive Markus Rex is joining the company as its first CEO and CTO. ownCloud has more than 350,000 users around the globe. The company is opening its a HQ in Boston, USA.

Rex was former senior vice president and general manager in charge of SUSE Linux at Novell. He also served as CTO of the Linux Foundation, CTO for Linux at Novell and was SUSE’s first vice president of Engineering. Karlitschek leads development and the ownCloud Open Source Project and Community.

The project/company has also received a funding round lead by Boston-based General Catalyst. "When we saw the ease-of-use, security and flexibility of ownCloud, we were sold," said John Simon, Managing Director at General Catalyst.

Muktware recently interviewed ownCloud founder Frank Karlitschek where he shared his thoughts about cloud computing.
