You might have noticed that Ubuntu is disappearing from Dell websites.
A Dell spokesperson spoke with PC Pro, "We’ve recently made an effort to simplify our offerings online, by focusing on our most popular bundles and configuration options, based on customer feedback for reduced complexity and a simple, easy purchase experience. We’re also making some changes to our Ubuntu pages, and as a result, they are currently available through our phone-based sales only."
The website also reports that "Dell’s advice page suggests that anyone other than open source developers stick to Windows."
The company recently changed a page on its website where it was suggested that Linux is more secure than Windows. It is apparent where the pressure came from.
Dell recently paid a penalty of $100 million for the alleged charges that it took money from Intel to not use competitor's chips in it machines. Conspiracy Theorist can easily theorize that Microsoft might have bribed or pressurized Dell to not support or sell Ubuntu anymore. We don't know the reality, thus we refrain from reaching any conclusion.
With the rise of Mac and Linux Microsoft has all the reasons to go back to the old practice of killing competition.
The IT world is full of myths about Gnu/Linux. One of the prominent myths is it is not for home user. This is nothing less of a FUD. Dell's recommendation of using Windows is a concern for anti-competitive watch dogs. On the contrary Ubuntu is easier to use and is much more secure than Windows. Linux works out-of-the box!
The rise of Android (which is Linux) proves what Linux is capable of doing. If anyone is going to get hurt with this decision, its Dell. Linux users will now go for non-branded PCs instead of once 'friendly' Dell.
Will you buy a Dell machine?
