Ubuntu came out with its first release on 20th October 2004. Ever since until now, it's login sound has been the familiar yet outdated drums beat. As much it suited the Ubuntu theme then at present it hardly blends or suits the new Ubuntu release. After much anticipation from the Ubuntu community, Canonical finally made a call for contributions for a sound theme to the community. This by the way was announced on 7th February 2012. Hence I must first apologize for the lateness of this whole article. However, this article is intended to inform the community about the soon to arrive sound theme.
The sound theme should portray the brand values of Ubuntu which are Reliable, Collaborative, Freedom and Precise. The deadline for contributions was 13th February 2012 which has already passed. 4 submissions were shortlisted which are presented below.
The community was asked to vote on their favorite sound. The votes were close. At the end, Sound 1 got the most number of votes.

Canonical will now work with the author of this sound theme and make some small modifications like make it more human less synthesized, increase the warmth of the tone, tighten the end note and lower the pitch. We are now waiting for the sound theme to be integrated to Ubuntu 12.04. For Ubuntu 12.04 only the login sound will land. But for the next release, other parts of the sound theme like notification sounds etc will be worked on.
Now that User Interface freeze is passed, the amount of updates would mostly be bug fixes and translation updates except for the new sound theme and the precise wallpapers.
Do you like the new login sound? Does it go well with Ubuntu 12.04 and upcoming future release of Ubuntu? Vote for your favorite sound in the comment below.
