Mary Meeker, an analyst and KPCB research partner, has published a mid-year report which reflects the growing dominance of Android. According to her report, the adoption of Android is six times faster than that of iPhone making Android the fastest growing platform.
The mid-year report was a surprise as she usually publishes her reports once a year. Internet Trends Report was actually released in May 2012 and this is just a quick update report for hot stuff.
Meeker believes that there will be further increase in Android consumers. She says that by the end of 2013 the shipment of around 190 million Android, 100 millions Windows and 80 millions iOS units is expected.
There has been a debate around when will the year of desktop Linux come. It seems it will never come because desktop PCs are becoming past. Smartphones and tablets are replacing traditional PCs.
One of the most exciting aspects is that in Q1 2012 Android shipment surpassed the shipment of (Internet enabled) Microsoft Windows PCs. Android was shipping on around 90 million devices per quarter in that time frame. Meeker predicts that by the end of Q2 2013 the install base of smart phones and tablets will surpass the install base of PCs.
So the year of desktop Linux may never come and instead Linux takes over the world in form of Android.
