Canonical has hired Matthieu James, the designer of the popular Faenza icons set, to work for new icons in Ubuntu 13.04. The news was admitted by Ubuntu chief Mark Shuttleworth in community question and answer session. Mark was asked whether they are planning a change in default look and style of Ubuntu, to which he replied:

"Yes. we have hired the amazing matthieu , which means we can start the icon project.”

Faenza icon set has been downloaded over 661 thousand times from DeviantArt and is one of the most popular third party icon theme out there.

Canonical are also working on theme changes by collaborating with a University team which are experts in typography, design and iconography. Also Mark noted that Ubuntu 13.04 will feature a much more robust and beautiful theme beyond Ambiance/Radiance.

Theme and appearance changes are highly welcome, as last appearance changed occurred in Ubuntu 9.10.
