After the discovery of a dialer app vulnerability in Samsung Galaxy SII and SII devices last week, Samsung was quick to roll-out patches to fix the flaw that could remotely factory reset the devices using a malicious code. However it is still not clear how many Android devices have this vulnerably and if they have been patched.  In the wake of this security crisis, Lookout Mobile Security has stepped in with a patch to save the day.

Lookout Mobile Security has updated its android application which can now block the exploit.  So far it is the only security solution to have this feature. Lookout believes that even if Google has issued a patch for the default dialer there can’t be any assurance that all devices will have it.

The updated version of Lookout will scan telephone links before they open. It will warn you if it detects that the number is malicious. The application will ask you if you want it to scan link, the first time you try to click on a telephone link. You can then set the task as default from the pop-up box that appears.

Lookout states that since the flaw can involve complete data loss from the device, it is better to be safe than sorry. That is why it is important to protect phone against Dialer app attack even though there is no known “in-the-wild” attack.
