Initially StuntRally had a very “cheap” feel about it with many bugs and looked unfinished. However, as VDrift is maturing as a project, lot changes are coming to StuntRally. The project has moved ahead adding more material, fixing bugs and seems to add more fun.
There has been inclusion of 8 VDrift tracks and the game now has a total of 91 different tracks which are categorized according to their terrain. Even though the number of tracks are enough to cater to different tastes, number of cars fails to satisfy the gamers. The community is doing great by contributing lot of new tracks but there is a dearth of new cars to test drive.
Now, coming to the game play, it is still not up to the mark but better than previous versions. There has been no change in the physics of the cars, and they are defined only by their speed. The crash sounds are much more realistic now and change according to the type of collision, from grinding metal sound to a full blast when you hit an object at high speed.
Another significant change comes with the replay feature. Now you can rewind the game as long as you like, just keep the backspace pressed. This comes in handy when you crash and over turn, or enter the “sky abyss” which has not been fixed yet.
On the technical front, there has been some graphic fixes on the shadows field and other optical effects. The performance is still not good and is not optimized enough to be playable on weaker systems.
To sum it up, the game lacks the realistic element which is a core factor determining a gaming experience. There has been lot of significant improvement in version 1.7 but still StuntRally has to go a long way before becoming a great open source game.
