The Valve Linux team are currently working on porting Left For The Dead 2 to Linux and they have blogged some interesting stats about the performance of the game. Using a high end hardware running  Ubuntu 12.04, they found that L4D2 runs significantly faster in Ubuntu than Windows 7 64 bit.

They used the following hardware for the test:

  • Intel Core i7 3930k
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680
  • 32 GB RAM

Previously, with Ubuntu when they ran the initial version, they got a mere 6 FPS of graphics performance. But after making the game to work well with kernel and OpenGL, they are getting 315 FPS. On the same hardware running Windows, L4D2 runs at 270.6 FPS.

This is quite surprising, and also shows the efficiency of underlying kernel and OpenGL. Currently the Valve team is working with different hardware vendors to provide better integration of Linux with hardware which will benefit all games in general.

Left For The Dead 2 will hopefully release later this year on Linux.
