We have already used Gnome shell's search feature to find apps, contacts, and maybe sometimes files too. In future versions, you will be able to do more and search even conversations, software and documents with just a few keystrokes.

The above screenshot shows how this feature will probably look like. Note that the search bar is in the middle, with apps, settings, conversations, files below them. You will also be able to search the web and the software repos with just a few clicks.
This feature is currently in design phase, waiting to be implemented. The order search results will be displayed are given below:
- Application Launchers
- Settings Panels
- Chat
- Contacts
- Notes
- Documents
- Calendar
- Videos
- Music
- Photos
- Non-default application content:
- Web
- Software
- Files
Contacts search will find your search keyword in name, nick, IM, email, title, phone and address field. Chat search will return conversations based on keywords matching in contact name, conversation name and conversation content. You can search documents by title, author, sharers, labels and document content.
You can read the feature wiki page here.
