Linux Deepin, one of the most active distributions in China, have released a new version. The version 12.06 is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS but unlike Ubuntu, it ships with Gnome shell rather than Unity. Gnome has got some major tweaks with extensions that make it more user friendly and appealing. Some of the new plugins added are given below:
- Hide Message Tray: As the name indicates, it can hide the Message Tray.
- Kimpanel: Enables users to search in Gnome Shell for applications, files or contacts.
- Panel Settings: Lets users decide where the panel should be (top/bottom) and whether it should autohide.

Linux Deepin uses Ubuntu like notifications. Deepin dock allows you to define application groups, get instant previews and allow you to close apps easily. Also applications and workspaces are placed on the left. The shell has integrated search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! thus making it easier to search right from the desktop. Also, Deepin comes with DeepWin, a WUBI like installer which allows you to install it directly from Windows.
Some of the best apps in this release are Deepin Music Player, Deepin Media Player and Deepin Software Center. The software store allows easy installation/uninstallation of apps and also supports updates, comments and ratings.
