The developers of the FreeBSD project have released the first and hopefully last beta of the FreeBSD operating system. Ken Smith, a member of the FreeBSD release engendering team announced the release at the FreeBSD stable mailing list. He hopes that this will be the only beta, and will be followed by two release candidates scheduled to be released next month.

This beta was scheduled to be released on 6th of July. The next release candidate was due on 20th of July, but Smith says he would shift that to a later date as they are already behind schedule.

This release is meant for developers/testers and must be avoided in production environments. You can read the release announcement here.

FreeBSD is a UNIX like open source operating system featuring stable desktops of Gnome, KDE, device drivers and most apps that are available for Linux. You can download this beta release here.
