We have been closely following Ubuntu App Showdown, a contest cum workshop. Over the past two weeks, 20 workshops sessions have been conducted which covered every step of creating and submitting an Ubuntu application.
This is the last week of this contest which will cover some topics such as Translation Support, Ubuntu One integration and Packaging support. The workshops are held via Google+ hangouts and recorded videos of past workshops are available on Youtube.
A lot of exciting apps have been created during this period. Some of them worth mentioning are:
Fogger: An application to turn any cloud app to a desktop application with unity integration.

Aplomb: blocks unproductive websites for given amount of time

Cuckoo: A simple alarm clock

gr8s: An application to build commandline scripts.

MenuLibre: An advanced menu editor.

Web Form-er: An HTML form builder

In case you missed the first two weeks, you can see the old workshops and get started with building your own Ubuntu app. With lots of exciting prizes on grabs like smartphones and laptops, an an Ubuntu T-shirt for every app submitted, Ubuntu App Showdown is an attractive contest for all developers.
