Lightworks

One of the few areas where Linux lags behind Windows and Mac in the desktop space is the lack of a professional grade film editing software. This situation was expected to be changed with Lightworks, the high-end non-linear film editing software which is expected to be released for Linux.

Editshare, the company behind Lightworks, announced open sourcing the editing platform in 2010. James Richings, Co-Managing Director, EditShare EMEA said back then, "Lightworks Open Source offers a highly collaborative development environment based on powerful and feature-rich underlying technology, which has come from over one million hours of software development."

The company also stated that, "We are looking to port it to Linux and OSX, but this won’t happen until late 2011."

2011 came and went and we did not see any Linux release of Lighworks. But it seems there is a Linux port running in the wild. The proof of Lightworks running on Ubuntu Linux can be seen in the video below.

The official statement from the company can be expected anytime soon.
