Valve is the saviour of the PC: Brian Fargo

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Brian Fargo, the boss at inXile Entertainment, the developer of Wasteland 2, has hailed Valve as the “savior of the PC” due to their efforts in making digital distribution such a success.

“They’re the saviours of the PC as far as I’m concerned,” Fargo told Eurogamer in an interview about Steam Early Access title Wasteland 2. He goes further to say, “They’ve been great. You think about where we all were, kind of in the dark ages, when there was nothing. There was just flash. There was no digital distribution. They’ve opened up a way to get directly to the audience in a way that isn’t politicised, or forces us to do exclusives or all the other things the console guys do.”

The console guys “put all sorts of guns to our head”, according to Fargo. “It used to be with Xbox, just until very recently, you couldn’t have an Xbox Live Arcade publishing license unless you had a retail product. What did that have to do with anything?

“Valve has all this power but they don’t wield it. They let us all work in an open system. So for that I can’t say enough good things about them.”

Fargo has been working with Valve for Steam’s Early Access program for their dream project Wasteland 2. Wasteland is the fore father of the cult classic Fallout series. Although Wasteland was a runaway success, they never could publish Wasteland 2 due to publisher demands. Though they did develop Fallout which became an instant hit too. Now thanks to Steam and Early Access, they are finally able to publish their dream project. Fargo is a strong believer in Steam’s Early Access model and believes that it will become refined over time as people become more involved in the process and thus passively sculpt the games that they will end up playing.
