Google has been removing more and more of its core apps from the core OS and publishing them as independent apps in the Google Play Store. Some of it was pushed by the lawsuit from Apple (remember the universal search app) and rest is driven by competitors who take Google’s Android without contributing anything back and creating their own fork or Android. The worst news, for users, is that these player don’t make their own services and apps available for those users who are using Google’s Android. The more Google separate core apps from the, the harder it will be for compeitors to take Google’s work and lock Google users out of their own OS.
Google has now published its own Camera app in the Play Store which anyone can install. It’s not the ‘same’ default app, it come with a different UI as well as additional features. It is using edges to pull buttons. A swipe from left edge pulls these options.
Now there is a flash icon on right bottom which offer these features.
It’s really neater and better than the default camera app. I still feel that Google’s camera app leaves a lot to be desired when compared with awesome features of Samsung Galaxy cameras. However now with camera being an independent app, Google may add more features. One big advantage of this move is that now non Nexus users will be able to use Google Camera, these users were till now stuck with the customized camera app that the hardware vendor would offer.
Here is a list of new features of the Google Camera apps.
• Photo Spheres for immersive 360º views
• Lens Blur mode for SLR-like photos with shallow depth of field
• Panorama mode with high resolution
• 100% viewfinder for getting the maximum resolution from the sensor (no dropped pixels)
• Updated UI that gets out of your way and is centered on an extra large capture button
• Works on phones and tablets running Android 4.4+ KitKat
I tested the app and it’s faster and snappier than the default app. Though I am a DSLR owner so I really don’t like the fake lens blur to create fake bokeh, but it’s nice for those who don’t own a DSLR or don’t know how to use it properly.Install Google Camera from Play Store
