Borderlands 2 on Linux not likely to happen, says Randy Pitchford

If you remember, a few days ago Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox Studios tweeted that Reddit is interested in a Linux version of Borderlands 2. He then tweeted that he would be talking with people to see if it was indeed possible. Following that, he tweeted recently that he had discussion with the “concerned people” and has come to the decision that a Linux version of Borderlands 2 is not going to happen anytime soon.

On being asked by a fellow twitter-er about the status of the talks, Randy Pitchfork replied, “@Two__Tone It happened. I talked to some people. I talked to some people about it today, too. I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much…”

Naturally this just begged the fact that more and more AAA games are announcing Linux as either a day one release platform or specific ports that bring them to Linux to be pointed out. And the person who asked the question actually did. To this the Gearbox Studio chief replies over Twitter, “@Two__Tone We can maneuver with markets. Today, unfortunately, the mind share cost cannot be rationalized and the economics are poor.”

So there you have it, directly from the horse’s mouth: a Linux version of Borderlands 2 isn’t going to happen anytime soon. This is disappointing especially since Borderlands 2 was sure to have a dedicated following even on the Linux community. Plus with Valve pushing Steam OS, promising a release catalog of 500 games at the end of the year, the reason about poor economics is kind of flimsy. They could have at least provided a bit more details rather than just citing poor economics, especially with multiple well-known titles promising/moving to a Linux release.

  1. This is, of course, stupid and ignorant.

Stupid because there’s already a mac version, and even though OSX is hugely different from linux, it is POSIX-compliant and does come with OpenGL. So Borderlands 2 must at the very least work well on OpenGL. The step from Windows to Linux is much greater than the step from OSX to Linux, generally speaking. So why not put in a little bit of extra effort?..

Ignorant, because Linux is a bigger platform than many vendors realize. I personally don’t use it, but I know a fair number of folks who do, and do gaming as well. Ignorant also because the Steambox, and because Ubuntu is expanding to other devices as well.

I suspect Gearbox sees Borderlands 2 as a cash cow that has done its job. Any more investment will not be profitable. They’ve probably moved on with Borderlands 3. Well, sort-of-hopefully.
