How many of you are a fan of the design of Google Glass? Well, renowned designer Marc Newson admits he is not. If you are wondering here’s why. Google Glass makes the wearer look like “a bit of an idiot,” believes Newson.
The Australian designer was recently speaking to Dezeen about his new eyewear range for glasses manufacturer Safilo. Besides Newson’s new range of glasses, the conversation lead to the issue that the fashion and industrial design worlds can learn a lot from each other.
“What Google have done thus far, I wouldn’t be seen dead wearing. It really looks pretty stupid,” he said. “It’s a little bit like that wonderful invention called the Segway. It’s such a fantastic piece of technology but you just look like a complete dick when you drive around on it. … That’s where the bridge to the world of fashion really doesn’t, or didn’t, work. That’s precisely the moment when I think the fashion world laughs at the world of industrial design, justifiably.”
Newson doesn’t really appreciate the manner in which the design industry approaches manufacturing and also how it brings things to market. He rather thinks that product designers could take advantage from fashion’s “extraordinary efficiency” in bringing designs to the masses. Fashion, on the other hand, should adopt industrial design’s material technologies and the application of techniques and processes.
“There’s an enormous territory that they both share, that they should both embrace, but there is this real trepidation on both sides to broach that ground,” he added.
