HP 8 1401 Android tablet launched at $170

HP has added a 7.85″ unit to compliment its line-up of 7″ and 8″ tablets. The HP 8 1401 is a quad-core tablet that runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. “It’s got responsiveness that delivers entertainment where you want it. Sleek and smart with technology you can trust, the HP 8 is big on performance, slim in style, and small on price,” claims the company.

The HP 8 is in fact a rebranded US launch of the Compaq 8 that was introduced in China in October last year. The tablet weighs about 11 ounces. Featuring a 7.85″ LCD display with 1024 x 768 resolution, the WiFi-only device packs a 1GHz AllWinner A31S quad-core processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Users can also benefit from additional storage with microSDHC support and 25GB lifetime cloud storage from Box. Other features include 0.3MP front-facing camera, 2MP fixed focus rear-facing camera and a 3800 mAh battery that is enough to offer you up to 7 hours of run time.

At $170–almost half the cost of the company’s other 8″ slate, the budget-friendly HP 8 is also one of the least expensive 8″ tablets on the market.
