Jolla’s Sailfish OS will be available for Android devices

Those of us who are excited about Open Source Sailfish OS, which rose from the ashes of MeeGo, in form of Mer will soon be able to test the OS on our Android devices.

Since Sailfish OS based devices are available only in Finland and is gradually expanding into other markets, it’s close to impossible to get our hands on such devices to try out Sailfish OS. The availability of the mobile OS for Android devices will allow more users to test and try this OS.

Jolla says in a press statement, “The Sailfish community has already ported Sailfish OS into several devices including major versions of popular Samsung Galaxy, Google Nexus, and Sony Xperia. Also, porting for highly popular Chinese Xiaomi products is under work in community projects.”

In addition to making the entire OS available for Android users, the company is also working on bringing the unique Jolla UI launcher to Android as an application.

Only disappointing story behind the UI is that unlike Mer/MeeGo it is a non-free or proprietary technology so it doesn’t excite an average open source user as much as it should have.

We are looking for aspiring bloggers and journalists for The Mukt. If you are interested, apply now!

The company says the app will be available soon from Jolla’s own site as well as Android markets such as Play Store.
