Plex Media Server adds support for Chromecast, can playback offline content

One of the killer and most demanded feature of Google Chromecast was the ability to play local content. Google’s priorities were at the beginning to get more and more original content providers to its’ platform instead of turning Chromecast into a DLNA player. When Koush of CyanogenMod created an app reverse engineering Chromecast protocol, Google change the API breaking the feature.

When we approach Google they did tell us that they do want to expand support to as many services as possible so the support for offline content was on cards.

It’s happened. Plex Media Server has announced support for Chomecast  for Android, iOS and the Web.

Elan of Plex said, “I’m happy to tell you that over the last few months, we’ve been working closely with Google to bring Plex to the Chromecast. It’s an honor for us to be among the first handful of apps on the device, and it’s been great working with Google – we’ve never met a smarter or more energetic group of people to work with.

However for for an initial period, the Chromecast feature is only available to our beloved PlexPass users, who get exclusive access to many new features.

App crashing on Android?
You may notice that the Plex app crashes when you try to open it on Android. The simple solution is uninstall the app. Then go to Chrome Cast app on your device and scroll down to see supported apps, install Plex from there; it will work.

  1. As I understood plex media server is closed source.

    • it is…the frontend is based on XBMC which has to be open source to be used as a base so they have that only as open source because they have to but the server is absolutely closed.

      • The author may want to update the article.

  2. Since PLex media server is Win / Mac only, I can not support it at this time. I have seen articles on how to make the server run on Ubuntu, but no native support is a “no-go” to us.

    • @dequire:disqus It’s NOT Win/Mac only. It’s available for Linux as well. It’s ‘native’. Which OS do you use?
