[How To] Install KDE 4.12 Software Compilation in openSUSE 13.1

The KDE community has announced the update of KDE Software Compilation, bringing the version number to 4.12. There are many notable features and bug fixes in this release which you should be taking advantage of.

KDE SC 4.12 will arrive in main repos as and when that happens but why should you wait when you an get it right now. It’s extremely easy under openSUSE to change repos. Just keep one thing in mind – don’t mix repos as it may cause conflict and you may end up with a broken system. So, if you are going to add a KDE packages repository remove all other KDE software related repositories.

Now open the Konsole (terminal) and run this command as root:

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/412/openSUSE_13.1/ KDE412

and

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_412_openSUSE_13.1/ KDE412E

These command will add KDE 4.12 and KDE 4.12 Extra repositories to your system. Now we need to update our system so that it updates packages from these newly added repos

Run these commands as root:

zypper dup --from KDE412
zypper dup --from KDE412E

Here ‘dup’ means distro update and ‘–from’ restricts it only to the mentioned repositories.
