After LG and Samsung, Apple is now working on flexible screen devices which would sport larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges. Among other companies, Japan-based Semiconductor Energy Laboratory – or SEL – is also focused on advancing the new display technology that promises to change the flexible display game as we know it.
SEL has developed a range of flexible displays that can bend, and they can also wrap around the sides or top of mobile devices. The outcome is a truly bezel-free experience.
The company has also developed high PPI LCD panels which use CAAC oxide semiconductors.
“CAAC stands for C-Axis Aligned Crystal. In this material’s structure, the crystals are aligned in the c-axis direction. Because CAAC itself is crystalline instead of amorphous, it has much higher reliability. Until now, with oxide semiconductors, reliability was generally thought to be a problem, but using this material solves that problem,” the company said.
It added: “One point about CAAC is that it enables flexible displays that can be freely designed. Another point is, CAAC enables very high TFT drive performance, because its mobility is high. So, with this material, high resolution can be achieved even in big displays.”
At the FPD International 2013 trade show, SEL showcased several different prototypes using its advanced CAAC technology.
The SEL prototype wrist device features a 3.4-inch OLED display and a bendable lithium ion battery. It also offers Qi wireless charging and Bluetooth. In tests, where the battery was repeatedly bent with the curvature (as you would expect in a wrist device), it could be put on and taken off over 10,000 times.
