Google is planning to take on the dominant payment platform ‘PayPal’ with its Google Wallet service. In a promotion scheme, popular android apps are offering customers discounts for using Google Wallet’s “Buy with Google” button.
The button allows 2-click checkouts on mobile apps. Google had introduced the Google Wallet Instant Buy Button in May which allows merchants selling physical goods and services through their android apps, to offer customers a 2 click checkout option with payment credentials from Google Wallet.
Currently the promotional discounts are being offered by Airbnb, Expedia, Fancy, newegg.com priceline.com, Ruelala, Tabbedout and Uber.
Google has plans to integrate Google Wallet into Gmail and also allow Chrome users to sync their Google Wallet payments with the browser. This integration will allow the browser to auto complete checkout forms one-commerce sites that have implemented Google’s API, making the process less tedious.
PayPal has much higher brand recognition and usage than any other payment platforms. While this promotional scheme with popular android apps may be a move in the right direction, Google Wallet will have uphill task if it wants to dominate this segment, overshadowing the current leader, ‘PayPal’. Google has announced that it will be shutting down Google Checkout on November 20, to focus on Google Wallet.
