It’s raining smartphones these days, and Samsung has made it sure theirs doesn’t break when the rain hits the ground. Today Samsung announced a new flavor of their flagship Galaxy S4 — Active — that is, in their own words, “the perfect companion for exploration, activity and adventure”. In short, Galaxy S4 Active is the rugged version of the soft and delicate S4.
JK Shin, CEO and President of IT and Mobile Communications Division at Samsung said:
The Galaxy S4 Active is the newest addition to the GALAXY series and is purposefully designed for active users who love the outdoors. Samsung has taken innovative features of the GALAXY S4 and added breakthrough protective design elements to create a design that thrives in an active environment and is built for a lifestyle of travel and exploration.
In terms of hardware, Active is very similar to the plain S4 with the exception of camera, whose megapixels are down from 13 to 8. Highlights:
- 1.9 GHZ Quad-Core processor
- 2,600mAh battery
- TFT LCD screen (443 PPI)
- 8-megapixel rear camera
- Apps: S Travel (Trip Advisor), S Translator, S Health
An interesting addition is the Glove Touch, which makes sure users can continue to touch and use their devices without ever taking off their gloves in weathers with temperature in the south of minus five degrees (personally, it’s a tempting feature for people like me who have to bear the cold extremes of north India).
And then there is the Aqua Mode, that enables users to take snaps with clarity underwater. Wait! Did I say underwater? S4 Active is designed to work underwater such that it’s able to bear its pressure for upto 30-odd minutes for upto 1 meter under.
There’s no mention of pricing yet. Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is slated for a UK launch some time this summer.
