Munich City Council has decided to give out Lubuntu, a Linux based operating system, to offer users a replacement of the soon to die Windows XP.
OMG! Ubuntu reports, “The proactive effort is been billed as an attempt to ‘prevent electronic waste’ from discarded computers that, whilst still serviceable with an alternative OS, would fail to meet the requirements of Windows 7 or Windows 8.”
According to estimate around 20 million German users are still running Windows Xp.
Why not Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is not a light weight distro and won’t run on old hardware. Lubuntu, on the contrary, can run on slower or older hardware without any issues.
